CHAPTER SEVEN

Maggie rushed to get dressed again after the county medical examiner left. Dr. Marsh informed her that the results of the inspection at the donut shop would be known within the next twenty-four hours. Maggie wondered if that meant they could be shut down for another full day.

She headed to the fairgrounds right after, keeping to the far side, near the midway and vendors’ row where the donut truck was parked among the other food trucks. She approached the food truck and waved at Naomi who was there helping out.

“Where is Bradley?” Maggie asked when she entered through the back door of the truck.

“We ran him off for a little while,” Naomi said. She kept her back turned toward Maggie while she waited on more customers at the window.

“Who else is here?” Maggie asked.

“Myra went after more ice,” Naomi announced. “We have had a lot of requests for iced coffee drinks. She met up with Brooks and Lexi a few minutes ago and is supposed to be bringing the ice back when she returns.”

Maggie tied an apron around her back and went to work filling orders for Naomi. She enjoyed the chance to work in the background. They worked through a line of about thirty customers before they had the chance to stop and rest for a while.

“Any word on the inspection?” Naomi asked her.

“No, but the coroner came to my house this morning while it was going on,” Maggie said. “She had some questions for me and decided to ask them herself instead of going through other law enforcement.”

“What was she like?” Naomi asked. She had been present the night before when Brett expressed his dislike of the woman.

“Very abrasive at first,” Maggie said. “But she kind of grows on you after a while. She made a big deal about how cute the young blond man was from the food truck.”

“Oh, boy.” Naomi laughed. “How red faced was she when she learned that the blond guy was your son?”

“Oh, very red, and I think that helped bring her back down to earth a little bit,” Maggie said. “She said that she took the job here because she was tired of places with a lot of people. I think she has some social anxiety issues.”

“Here comes another line,” Naomi warned. She rose from her seat and headed to the serving window. Maggie rose, too. She placed her empty coffee cup in the trash and began filling orders once again.

Myra appeared half an hour later. Maggie helped move the ice into the freezer and chatted with her for a few minutes before she decided to take a break herself. Bradley texted her that he was on the way back to the food truck. Maggie decided that three people inside the food truck was a lot, and four was too many.

She stood outside of the donut truck for a moment and scanned the crowd. She pulled out her phone and sent a text to Brett. “Hey, are you at the fairgrounds?” she wrote.
